Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living systems. It combines chemistry and biology to understand how biological systems work. A Biochemistry major provides students a solid foundation in both Chemistry and Biology with specific training in Biochemistry. This training prepares students for graduate programs in biochemistry and related disciplines, employment in biochemical and biomedical research, as well as medical school or other health-related professional education. The program has at its foundation the introductory Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses that many science majors take in their first two years. In the upper division, the major narrows its focus to biologically-related chemistry courses and molecularly-related biology courses.
The Biochemistry major requires 120 credit hours, if the ER/S Focus Elective and the Diversity Curriculum Electives also satisfy other elements of the core. Students wishing to have their degree certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) or by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) will need to complete 121 credit hours, with a few changes to which courses they take.
