Health Economics and Clinical Outcomes Research (HECOR), M.S.

The Master of Science in Health Economics and Clinical Outcomes Research [MS-HECOR] is a 42 credit hour professional program offering students a foundation in health economics, outcomes research, and health services research. HECOR is a growing field in which researchers quantify the clinical and economic value of healthcare interventions. Industry, payers, self-insuring employers, patients, and government agencies use HECOR study results to make better informed healthcare decisions and thereby improve patient care. The program is designed to train students to use research and evidence on the effectiveness, benefits, and harms of different treatment options in order to make informed healthcare decisions.

Students enrolled in this program will take courses spanning health economics, economic evaluation, statistical modeling with observational data (e.g., payer, electronic medical records, and hospitals), epidemiology in domestic and international settings, and managerial and quality-improvement practices. Our students learn the skills needed to pursue impactful careers as healthcare analysts and administrators in the private and government health services industry, including public health agencies, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, hospital systems, and clinical research organizations.

The program is designed as an intensive part-time program to be completed entirely online. Students may complete the program in as little as two years with courses offered in the fall, spring, and summer terms.

Curriculum

Xavier University’s 42-credit hour Master of Science in Health Economics and Clinical Outcomes Research program prepares students with strong skills in statistics, health outcomes research, health economics, and population health. This flexible program concludes with a capstone project, which demonstrates the skills and knowledge gained throughout the program’s coursework.

HECOR Core Courses (12 credits)

The core courses will expose you to a general overview of HECOR. They introduce a number of contemporary approaches to comparative effectiveness research and economic evaluation. There will be discussion of the principles of behavioral theory and its application to management and team work within health services. You will be introduced to epidemiologic concepts, skills and data, the application of epidemiology to population health and health services and to the application of epidemiologic literature in health services. The core courses conclude with a foundation of basic ethical theory and its application to HECOR.
