EDAD 502 - MTSS & Behavioral Intervention 3 Credit Hours The purpose of this course is to provide a framework of understanding for establishing an MTSS system that supports all students in developing an internal locus of control. Often also called Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS) this will include establishing, organizing, assessing a school wide MTSS program. The development of a rigorous Tier One System will be emphasized. Types of supports, developing targeted supports, Tier two and three strategies will be provided and discussed. Methods of discerning the differences of the tiered interventions will be addressed. This course emphasizes the development of an internal locus of control, self-regulation, and behavior change. A responsive classroom mind set will be presented while emphasizing the importance and centrality of developing an engaging classroom, community building and well organized and predictable environments. Systems will be presented for data collection, problem solving, intervention formation, assessment, data base creation and maintenance and a clear process for advancement in the MTSS process if data warrants this movement. The presentation and usage of the social emotional learning standards will be presented as central to the development of Tier one, two and three interventions. Methods of data collection and analysis will be presented. This course will analyze the PBIS process using a critical theory lens and will focus on equity for all students and guarding against the “school to prison pipeline” often associated with existing PBIS plans.
