The structure of and issues pertaining to policing, courts, and corrections, respectively, will be critically explored. Beyond examining issues that cut across all facets of the criminal justice system (e.g., the measurement of crime, discretion, criminal justice policymaking), the class also will explore current issues in policing, courts, and corrections. Topics will include: types and styles of policing and recent police reforms, prosecutorial decision-making and the use of specialty courts, and the role of correctional officers in the rehabilitation of incarcerated people and the reentry and reintegration of individuals released from prison.
