THTR 219 - American Musical Theater 3 Credit Hours This course surveys American musical theater from the mid-19th century to the present day. Examining the lives and representative shows of the most significant theater composers and writers, it places each work in its historical and social context. It also explores the intertwining of music and drama and the ways in which musical style and structure support the goal of any drama: telling a compelling story. Spanning 150 years from the minstrel show to Rent, works include (among others): Showboat, Guys and Dolls, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables, and The Lion King.
