Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors, Minors, Certificates, Curriculums and Special Programs

Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system. In this highly interdisciplinary field, students will gain a foundation in cellular biology, physiology, and psychology. After a core sequence of courses, students can choose electives to further develop their interest in both sciences, preparing them for future careers in health care, clinical psychology, biotechnology or scientific research. This program is appropriate for students intending to go to medical school if they also complete the Biomedical Sciences minor.

Requirements for the Neuroscience Major

Core Curriculum Requirements

Students must complete the Undergraduate Core Curriculum  requirements.  Specific courses that must be taken to satisfy the core curriculum requirements include natural and social science courses.

Science Core

46 hours

Biology Electives

6 hours

Capstone

2 hours

  • Senior Capstone from BIOL 495 - 499

Notes:

  • A 2.000 cumulative average must be attained in all major courses.
  • Students planning to attend Medical School should also declare the Biomedical Sciences minor, which will require them to complete 19 additional hours in Chemistry and Physics.
  • Students planning on a clinical psychology degree should also declare a Psychology minor which will require them to complete 6-9 additional hours in Psychology and consult their psychology adviser.
  • Students planning to attend PA school should also take CHEM 240-243 Organic Chemistry, CHEM 440 Biochemistry I and BIOL 140-143 Human A&P or BIOL 354-355 Human and Comparative Anatomy. Some PA schools require physics as well.
  • Consult with the pre-professional health adviser about all health professional plans.
