Genetics, B.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Arts and Sciences

Genetics is the study of genes-their structure, their function, their expression and their diversity. Students in this program will build a foundation in biology and chemistry from which to then explore classical and modern genetics, molecular biology, genomics and genetic engineering. From Mendel to mutations, they will come to understand the principles of inheritance and how genomes change. They will investigate how genes are regulated and how genome sequences are analyzed. They will explore natural human diversity and delve into medical genetics, including disease risk and personalized medicine. Students will graduate prepared to work in molecular biology and genetics laboratories or graduate school in biomedical research, conservation biology or genetic engineering. They might also go on into professional school for health care, including genetic counseling, physician assisting or med school. Students interested in health care professions can additionally complete the Biomedical Sciences minor.
