HIST 378 - French Revolution 3 Credit Hours The French revolution entailed far more than just the toppling of a king. It also included massive changes in religious practice, warfare, national identity, language and even clothing. The very institutions that made up French society - the Catholic Church, the Absolutist state, noble privilege-came under attack, but it was not clear what would take their place. Europe went to war for over twenty years, and the French underwent periods of civil war, terror and dictatorship. We will examine the influence of prominent individuals, such as Marie Antoinette, Robespierre and Napoleon, on the course of these events, while also consdiering long-term social, political and cultural change. We study these events in order to understnad modern France, the revolutionary process, and the world we live in today.
